Everyone Has a Legacy — What Will Yours Be?

The American Physical Society’s (APS) Legacy Circle recognizes thoughtful benefactors who have made a provision for APS in their estate plans. These gifts carry on a giving legacy of more than 125 years to support the APS mission of advancing and diffusing the knowledge of physics.

What does this mean for you?

Making a planned gift is a wonderful way to show your support and appreciation for APS while accommodating your own personal, financial, estate-planning, and philanthropic goals. With smart planning, you may actually increase the size of your estate and/or reduce the tax burden on your heirs.

Just as important, you will know that you made a meaningful contribution to support the mission of APS, supporting programmatic work that benefits physicists and the physics community.

Planned gifts to APS take various forms:

  • Name APS as a beneficiary of your retirement funds, your life insurance proceeds, or in your will.
  • Support a specific APS activity that aligns with your values and priorities.
  • Support the area of greatest need as designated by the APS Board of Directors.

In all cases, APS manages your gifts carefully and professionally, and uses them to honor your legacy.

The following are just a few examples of the many programs that will be sustained by the planned gifts of APS members:

Careers
Helps people discover diverse career possibilities and become effective mentors through these programs like CUWiP, Career Mentoring Fellows, APS National Mentoring Community (NMC), and more.

Education
Supports physics educators and improves physics education at all levels through programs like the APS Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity Alliance (APS-IDEA), PhysTEC, the EP3 Initiative, and more.

Public Engagement
Communicates the excitement and importance of physics to all audiences through programs like the Joint Network for Informal Physics Education & Research (JNIPER), Science Trust Project, PhysicsQuest, and more.

Please note that APS is a 501(c)3 organization, therefore your gift is tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.

Informing Us Now About Your Intent

Philanthropy plays a pivotal role in expanding our programs, honoring great achievements and securing financial stability as the industry evolves. Legacy gifts are often the ultimate commitment of those who want to give back to the society that made an impression throughout their lifetimes. Informing APS today about your intent helps the Society make long-term plans for the future.

If you have already included APS in your will, but have yet to inform us, please let us know.

Suha Oguz and Leslie Lord

“We committed to joining the Legacy Circle because it has become abundantly clear that science illiteracy is inflicting great harm on our society. What APS programs are aiming to do is more important than ever and we want to see them continue.”
–Legacy Circle members Suha Oguz and Leslie J. Lord

Jaylyn C. Umana

“You've not only strengthened one of the important legs that the Community stands on, but you may have also just changed the trajectory of a number of young physicists' lives for the better.”
–Jaylyn C. Umana, student recipient of National Mentoring Community support
